The authors are clearly not from Texas, have possibly never been to Texas (or much of it) and although they obviously did research much of its history, they reported it in a significantly biased fashion. It would be very useful for readers to know who the actual contributors were to this amalgamation of data and opinion. The required emphasis on how Europeans took the land from natives, (very true), and USA colonists dishonestly cheated the Spaniards/Mexicans (partially true), and that slavery was the most important aspect of most of Texas history (untrue, but definitely significant) leaves little additional “time” for discussion of the myriad of good, great, and interesting things about Texas and its people. It is understandable, that to make for interesting reading, the authors needed to leave out myriad details and focus on a few areas. However, their lack of knowledge about Texas geography and even the most important industries leads them to misinform the reader. I will provide one example of this relating to our most important industry – petrochemical. Their odd approach is captured by the excessive focus on Corsicana (the site where oil was 1st found in Texas, 1894). It actually became only “one of Texas’ wealthiest cities” (according to their website) and not in the nation as they report, and only for a very short time. Instead Galveston Texas’ shipping wealth resulted in that city having the highest per-capita income in the nation, until it was mostly wiped out by the hurricane of 1901, still the worst natural disaster (# of people killed) ever to occur in our country (never mentioned). Emphasis on the sequela of the Spindletop gusher in SE-Texas was oddly muted. It led to development of >100 petrochemical refineries spread across a > 200 mile area (and together with nearby Louisiana this represents ~45% of the nation’s refining capacity). Roughly 6 million people live there (vs. 26,000 in Corsicana). They did not understand what an oil refinery even was ( “….the first oil refinery was built in 1897. This significantly increased how much oil could be pulled from the land…”). Although fairly accurate overall, the author/editors have been a bit sloppy. They made multiple misstatements of fact (such as twice using incorrect dates indicating that Mexico still controlled Texas 8-10 years after it had won independence) and used incorrect grammar on occasion (which I could care less about personally). So, I would recommend other options for a short Texas history experience. Very good short/concise history of Texas. They got in everything from the per-Spanish days to NASA. Well done! Captivating History does an excellent job in this book of giving the reader a feel for the state and it's history, both good and bad! As always if you are looking for an in depth history these books aren't for you but if you're looking for short reads that give you the basics and opens the door to move on to some thing else if the subject interest you, these are what you need. Captivating History does a better than average job of being balanced and presenting facts in most of their books vs some others that appear to have a "revisionist" twist in either the writing or editing.
