I used this book to help a relative prepare for the RBT exam. The book is only useful for explaining the content of the exam, and does not cover things you might have seen in an SAT prep book, like how to prepare, what the format of the test is or how to interpret results. The book covers measurement, assessment, skills acquisition, behavior reduction, documenting and reporting, professional conduct and scope of practice. Unfortunately, the author has chosen to use "fill in the blank" type question at the end of each chapter, instead of the multiple choice of the real test, and many of these 'fill in the blank" questions are very poorly formulated. The book is generally clearly written, though it needs dramatically improved editing. Example: p. 24 lists " discrete trail training" DDT as a topic. It's not "trail", but "trial" and no sooner are complex descriptions covered than numerous acronyms are added for them. If the exam uses acronyms, that's great, but throwing VI, VR, FR and FI at the student doesn't seem to help unless the acronyms are on the exam. The grammar is painful to see: "If a client fell and hurt both their knees." (P.44) Punctuation is equally bad: "RBT's always _____programs they do not _____ programs." (p. 49) Example of pitiful definition, p. 58: "Indirect FBA Procedures: Part of an FBA may include record reviews, interviews, and rating scales. There is very little contact with the client." If you don't know what the acronym "FBA" stands for, you're stuck...there is no expansion of acronyms to the full terms, and this definition doesn't even define what an "FBA" is. It just repeats "FBA." Nevertheless, there are not that many free materials available to study with, so the book was useful, but I do hope it will be reissued after updating by someone who knows something about pedagogy and thorough revision by a better editor. Like many others have stated, this book needs better editing. The grammar needs improvement, and it definitely needs work on some of the wording (especially the test questions for the mock exam). But this is the least of my worries. I'm more concerned about some of the assigned answers on the mock exam, and if you are feeling the same way, make sure to reach out to your assigned BCBA (see attached photo of one of my concerns... my answer was based off what the 40hr course from Relias advised, regarding conflict of interest/stress management. Picked the "best" one, but even my answer throws me off, because of the last sentence).This book is helpful if you are already familiar with ABA terminology, its abbrevations, and most of its concepts. It provides many good examples when going over terms, but they are very direct and general. If you need a deeper understanding, this book will not be enough; it is merely meant to be supplementary material. By the way, if you don't know the abbreviation, its actual term and definition can be located in the glossary.Before taking your RBT test, you are required to go through a competency assessment. Use this as a tool to ask your clinical questions, so as to clarify any confusion/concerns you may have.If you are a beginner, I suggest Googling: ABA Rocks. They break down terms, give examples, and explain in thorough, scientific detail what each term/concept means and how it can be applied. Great content to pair with this book.Cheers!
